St. Leonhard am Wonneberg

horse pilgrimage and living traditions

In St. Leonhard am Wonneberg, it is all about feeling comfortable and at ease, about living and reenergizing. The houses in this town flank the streets which surround the pilgrimage church with its onion-dome tower. Wonneberg, which is the highest community on Waginger See, is actually composed of 50 different sub-communities, with St. Leonhard the largest of these: certain to surprise you with its vibrant living traditions and ancient Bavarian roots.

The pilgrimage church in the center of St. Leonhard has a centuries-old tradition of its own and houses various treasures from the Late Gothic period.

The annual Leonhardiritt and blessing of the horses, which takes place on the Sunday immediately after the feast of this patron saint on November 6, with its colorfully decorated floats as well as festively decked-out carriage drivers and horsemen, is one of the biggest and most attractive parades of its kind here in the heart of Old Bavaria. Aside from many opportunities for bike rides, the three local inns invite you to stop by for typical Bavarian specialties and other refreshments. One small attraction is the maypole, which has been immortalized in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest of its kind.

Also very worthwhile: whip-cracking performances by the Leonharder Goasslschnalzer, a guided tour of the church and a visit to the Roman milestone in Egerdach, which dates back to the year 201 A.D.
