Castle Days in Tittmoning

jugglers, knights and wild revelers

We bid thee greetings! When the pounding of the blacksmith’s hammer is punctuated by the sounds of a bagpipe, you can be assured that Tittmoning is celebrating its Castle Days. Every year in September, a small part of the Chiemgau region close to the castle is transformed into a medieval meeting place, a place where you can lose yourself completely in the days of yore. Join forces with an illustrious roundtable, feast in the castle courtyard or watch the court jester as he gets up to his mischief amid the ancient walls. Experience a journey of discovery into the distant past!

The enticing smell of roasted meat floats in the air. Your ears catch the sound of swords clanging along with strange melodies modulating from the shawm, while a muscular artisan in his smoke-blackened workshop pounds his heavy hammer down onto the anvil. Noble ladies sporting precious robes visit the tent of the falconer, who explains the acrobatic skills of birds of prey, while just a few meters farther along, a woman herbalist argues with a scholar clad in black satin about the healing powers of the medicines in their wondrous flasks and crucibles.

During the historic Castle Days in Tittmoning in September, guests and locals experience how the world of the Middle Ages is brought back to life. Knights, archers, minstrels, jugglers, fire eaters, soothsayers, musicians and other good folk gather in the castle and their tents, granting you glimpses into earlier times. With its mighty walls and metal doors, this powerfully fortified building was seemingly made for festivities such as these. For more than 780 years, this castle, which was once even resided in by the archbishops, has stood here as an emblem of the town at its feet, ensconced in the romantic natural idyll of the Ponlachgraben.

We should note, however, that even during Castle Days, both castle and town are more than merely something pretty to look at. In over 25 historic rooms, this fortification is also home to the Rupertiwinkel Museum and the Tannery Museum.

On display here are important collections of folk art, rural life as well as craftsmanship spanning four centuries. Let us also not overlook the castle ghost, Hieronymus, who makes his home here as well. We hear he has a big heart, especially for the youngsters.

The castle courtyard also serves as an atmospheric backdrop for concerts, stage plays as well as market days. As for the town of Tittmoning – with its narrow streets, picturesque old buildings and a stream, the old parish church and a remarkable town square – it, too, invites fellow culture lovers to set out on a nostalgic journey of discovery in search of medieval Upper Bavaria.
