Schimmer Glass Studio

the art of fragility

The glow of a fire has always held a fascination for people. That is especially the case when the fusion of quartz sand and fire produces glass art. At this glass studio in Waging, you will meet three passionate craftsmen who manufacture by hand colorful pearls, rings, filigree insects, elegant writing implements such as the Venetian glass fountain pen, wine decanters and glasses. Or puzzlingly entwined shapes known as radiolarian models which, if you look at them through a microscope, are reminiscent of microorganisms. At glassblowing demonstrations and workshops, you are able to immerse yourself completely in the world of these glass artists.

Assembled here in the loft-like Schimmer glass studio in Waging am See are two specialists of the glassblowing guild: Michael Murner (a master glassblower) and Liane Jähde (designer of glass pearls and jewelry) are both true artists, using traditional techniques to transform glowing rods of glass into unique artworks. Watch excitedly during your visit to the studio as Murner shapes long tubes into wine glasses over a 2500° flame. Shimmering in blues and yellows, the flame passes back and forth across the glistening material until, thanks to experienced hand movements, occasional blowing and rapid rotation, the desired form becomes more and more clearly recognizable.

With the aid of tongs and a variety of colorful glass rods, Liane manages to conjure up multicolored glass fruits, miniature elephants and fishes. “Waging Joy Fish” can be worn on the wrist or neck and are a real highlight with locals and guests alike. In the display window, we find a selection of decorative rings.

This is a unique experience for young and old, granting you a glimpse into a craft that only very few people still master today.

Schimmer glass studio in Waging am See has existed since 2007. At their studio, which also serves as a shop, customers are offered a selection of glasses, wine carafes, jewelry, Venetian-style glass fountain pens, vases, designer objects and gift ideas. By arrangement, this glass manufacturer is also more than happy to fill special orders.

On the last Friday in July and every Friday in August, the glass studio invites visitors to join them from 7 until 7:45 PM for their glassblowing demonstrations.
