The Book Hut at the Knallerhof just outside Kirchanschöring is essentially the train platform, from which you will embark into the world of the totally unexpected. Where countless adventures await!

“The Discovery of Slowness” is the title of a bestseller by author Sten Nandolny, who grew up on the shores of Chiemsee. This motto could also very well be applied to the Knallerhof. It stands on top of a hill close to Kirchanschöring, known as the Güsshübel, overlooking the surrounding countryside. A special oasis of complete peace, removed from time itself. Wooden beds to lie on, a small beer garden – where you can enjoy picnics you have brought with you – on a field between old apple trees, flower gardens and lovingly designed art displays – all inviting you to pause and appreciate every single, peaceful moment. Your eyes can roam out to the mighty Watzmann and Dachstein in the distance. The aroma of summer floats in the air.
Franz and Erika Aicher have created a small corner of paradise for themselves here. And they are delighted to share it with guests who pay them a visit. “Our generation grew up in a time full of borders and prohibitions. But here, we do it differently: People are invited simply to come to us and make themselves at home.”

Together with their neighbors, they have built a new and quite extraordinary chapel as a place of pure tranquility. Right next to that, they converted an old sheep shed into their Book Hut, overgrown with grapevines, complete with reclining chairs and a table for snacks. Here, grandparents love nothing more than to sit down with their grandchildren and read the youngsters a magical story out loud.

A neighboring farmer knits. New reading material is never in short supply. Magazines that appeal to grown-ups as well as children lie around, while the shelves are stocked with new releases, illustrated editions and photography books, works about history, things uniquely Bavarian, tourist guides, novels and fascinating insider tips. And all carefully sorted by subject.

“Here, we have everything except rubbish”, says Erika Aicher. How convenient then, that a shortcut along the Luise Rinser Hiking Path leads right past the Book Hut in Güßhübel.

Needless to say, exciting adventures aren’t confined to between those book covers. One particular curiosity is the painstakingly restored wooden farmhouse, which has the air of a living, lived-in museum.

Hidden in quiet corners and secluded rooms, beneath low wooden beams, are the treasures of earlier generations and thousands of fascinating details. And of course: books, books, books.

Even in the WC, there is no shortage of reading materials. When, during the coldest days of the year, the Book Hut is emptied out and a nativity scene takes its rightful place, the barn, which has been converted into an event location, provides a worthy asylum for all of the literature.

Then, on winter days, visitors can come and leaf through books to their heart’s content next to a roaring stove. And by so doing, quite by-the-by, stressed souls find an escape from the daily grind in this peaceful place, brushing shoulders with others who share similar interests.
