When peat farming stopped at the end of the last century, the Schönramer Filz developed into what it is today: one of the most important moorland landscapes in Upper Bavaria. Take a timeout amid virgin nature and discover the diverse landscapes of the high moors for yourself.
The Schönramer Filz is actually one of the biggest expanses of high moors in all of Southeastern Bavaria. From the 1920s until 1998, much of the area was exploited for its peat resources.
Today, however, the “Filz” is protected and the development of the moors and heaths is left up to nature itself. It is one of the most popular magnets for visitors in the region flanking Waginger See. A new wooden spiral structure serves as an info station at the trailhead – before you set out along a theme path that teaches you all about the history and nature of this moorland area.
Info boards alongside the path itself share fascinating facts about the moor, heath and the forest reserve. The car park, which is also where you will find the info spiral, is located 1.6 km from Schönram in the direction of Laufen, on the left-hand side of the road.
